When I was young, summer in South Georgia was revival season. Traveling pastors came to town and preached on sin and salvation for a week. In the days before indoor air conditioning, they used the oppressive July heat as an excuse to preach on hell. We believed everything they said in their sermons because we were already burning up!

One of the symbols used for the Holy Spirit is fire. Even now we say, “He’s really on fire!” when we hear someone who is excited about Jesus. This summer, as you travel to see friends and family or visit a church in a new place while you vacation, give some thought to what it means to be on fire. Consider reading Acts to see how the apostles were transformed after they received the Holy Spirit. Look at how Christianity spread like wildfire in those early days, and invite the Holy Spirit to light a renewed fire inside you.

Summer is a great time to start a casual, short-term Bible study in your neighborhood. Ask the neighbors you know, and some that you don’t, if they’d be interested in gathering together for a few weeks to read and discuss a specific book. With film-based studies available, you could create a movie premiere atmosphere for several families to come together to watch a Christian film and discuss it over popcorn and Milk Duds. Neighborhood parties, or hosting a barbecue at your house, can be a great time to get to know people in your community. Share your faith as God leads you, and perhaps you’ll see the love of Christ spread like fire through your neighborhood.

On July Fourth, we celebrate Independence Day. Though the day will be filled with fireworks, parades, and picnics, it’s important to remember that our nation was founded by a small group of Christians who were committed to freedom of religion. However, as our country has grown, many fear that we’re moving toward freedom from religion. As you listen to politicians and political speeches this July, whether they are speaking at your local fair or on the Sunday morning news shows, ponder what they’re saying about our freedom. And realize that Jesus bought us our true freedom—freedom from our sin.

July Booster Shot: July Fourth is a time of celebration and fireworks. Enjoy, but be cautious. Don’t hold onto a lit firecracker.
